Promoting quality education in the greater Himalayan region
Karuna-Shechen | Most children across the Himalayan region do not have access to basic education and the quality of teaching in government schools is poor and deteriorating daily. Karuna-Shechen, a non-profit organization that works with a network of local partners in the greater Himalayan region to provide education, health care and social services to poor families, are working to change this situation and to offer an alternative: quality education for all.
They place special emphasis on the empowerment of women and girls and on the preservation of their beneficiaries’ unique cultural heritages. Karuna-Shechen was co-founded by Rabjam Rinpoche and Matthieu Ricard, a Buddhist monk, author and photographer in 2000, to address the suffering he observed in India, Nepal and Tibet.
Fondation Carène’s contribution in 2008 and in 2009 represented a total of Sfr. 20’000.
